Criticizing Photography

Within this article Terry Barrett talks about the theoretical positions affecting photography today.  The first theory has to do with the reality of photography. It is thought that photography has this relationship with duplicating reality but there is much evidence that says a photograph can be changed based on artistic intent or the way it's presented.  Transparency also adds to the medium of photography. It is a way in which we can see through the photograph to see things that are not neccissarily in our presence. The rest of the reality and coventionalism theory ends with pictorial reality being rooted in culture.
Next Terry talked about modernism and postmodernism.  Modernity is rooted in democracy, capitalism, industrialization, science, and urbanization. Post modernism works against modernism.  Onward in the article Barrett talks about Marxism and how representation effects what is represented. Then he talks about feminist theory and photography. Gender and sex are two different things that must be understood before one talking about feminist theory. Sex refers to the physical features and gender refers to what the culture defines as what it is to be male or female.

Final Project Proposal

1. What is the conceptual basis for your work?
I have a lot of ideas for this project but in terms of thinking about how this project will force people to see the physical work, I'm thinking about making my piece experiential.  I think it would be really cool to have picture and turn them into puzzles possibly.
I also like the idea of layering several images on top of each other and manipulating them in different ways whether t may be burning specific spots on the paper or cutting out spots so that you can see the different layer.

2. What is the primary subject matter that you will be photographing?
I think I want to photograph people.

3.  Who is the prime artistic inspiration for this project?
Probably Julie Cockburn.  I have spent some time looking at her work but I feel that looking at it online doesn't give it justice.  I am not able to experience her work.

4.  How will this project challenge you and exhibit the ways in which you have grown as an artist and photographer?
Thinking about the physicality of the actual work is challenging me already.  I have never thought about manipulating a photograph after it has been printed.  I think it will be cool to work with some outside media and bring that into my images.

5.  What is your vision for the final prints/ objects?  How big are they? What type of paper will you use?
If I decide to do some sort of puzzle then I want it to be of medium size.. I want it to be a little bigger than a piece of paper.  The other idea i was thinking I would use cheaper paper but I would want it to be of a larger size.

6.  How can I help you complete your project?
Input.  I havent done anything like this before so any ideas from personal experience. :)

The Photograph as an Art Object

Felicity Cole's article, The Photograph as an Art Object, talks about how photography as a medium is being challenged by artists.  Artist like, John Stezaker, Julie Cockburn, Aliki Braine, and Darren Harvey-Regan.  I think this article is particularly fascinating because it is preparing us for our upcoming  project, post digital.  Most of the artists think about how they can manipulate images to be more of a sculptural/ 3D objects.  It makes viewers observe the image more than they usually would if it were just one flat plain.  "The concept of the photograph as an object becomes more immediate when the photographs take the form of a photo book, an object that is designed to be picked up and whose pages must be physically turned in order to see the photographs".  I particularly think this quote is relevant to my intermediate photo class because we are making photo books.  I regard photo books as a work of art.  Cole concludes that the common theme among all the artists discussed it their usage of not just photography but also outside media and also that the physical nature of the image is more important than the actual content of the image.
