The Photograph as an Art Object
Felicity Cole's article, The Photograph as an Art Object, talks about how photography as a medium is being challenged by artists. Artist like, John Stezaker, Julie Cockburn, Aliki Braine, and Darren Harvey-Regan. I think this article is particularly fascinating because it is preparing us for our upcoming project, post digital. Most of the artists think about how they can manipulate images to be more of a sculptural/ 3D objects. It makes viewers observe the image more than they usually would if it were just one flat plain. "The concept of the photograph as an object becomes more immediate when the photographs take the form of a photo book, an object that is designed to be picked up and whose pages must be physically turned in order to see the photographs". I particularly think this quote is relevant to my intermediate photo class because we are making photo books. I regard photo books as a work of art. Cole concludes that the common theme among all the artists discussed it their usage of not just photography but also outside media and also that the physical nature of the image is more important than the actual content of the image.
